$20 tip turns into $100,000 lottery prize for Maryland Uber driver
A winnings prize provides a meaningful trip for this winner and his family
An Uber driver won six figures after using an unexpected tip of $20 to buy a lottery ticket.
An anonymous Maryland man received a large tip from a customer and used it to win a $100,000 lottery prize.
As one Silver Spring Uber driver drove around to various destinations, he noticed he was running low on gas at the end of the night. At the Exxon gas station on Colesville Road in Silver Spring, he ended the evening.
The lottery vending machine was inside the convenience store. As he stood in front of the machine, pondering which ticket to buy, he didn't realize he would walk away six figures richer.
At the gas station, the 40-year-old planned to scratch off a $10 scratch-off ticket after receiving an unexpected, very generous $20 tip.
I debated getting one more 'Ca$h Bonus' ticket after my $10 pick was a bust. I must have stood there for five minutes thinking about it."
It was the right decision. The Maryland Lottery reports he revealed a prize that appeared to be worth $100,000 after scratching his second ticket.
Despite the confirmation from the ticket scanner, he wanted to make sure he was absolutely sure before informing his wife of the news. Therefore, he scanned it again at home on the Lottery's app.
When he told her about the prize money, he told her the first thing he planned to do was to take her and their children to visit their East African home, which they had previously been unable to do due to financial limitations.
"I told her we could go together now with the kids," he said. "There were a lot of tears."
The "Cash Bonus" instant game, launched in August 2021, still has three top prizes of $100,000.
Additionally, nine out of 24 third-tier prizes of $10,000 and three out of nine second-tier prizes of $50,000 are still available for claim.
A $1,000 bonus commission will be paid to the retailer who sold the winning ticket.
