As a result of making films about herself, I feel as if she has limited herself.
On The Bombay Journey, film maker Hansal Mehta talked candidly about how his 2017 movie Simran failed.
In the lead role, Kangana Ranaut received mixed to positive responses. It had a good run, but was deemed a failure.
According to Mehta, she was a great actor, but working with her on Simran was a 'huge mistake'.
When asked if Kangana actually took over the editing of Simran, Mehta replied, "Edit nahi takeover kia the usne, but edit takeover karne ke liye kuch tha nahi material hi nahi tha jo usne shoot karvaya tha.".
She is a very talented actor, she is a very good actor, really really good actor who, I feel has limited herself by making films about herself. You need not make all the characters become what you want to believe you are.”
Similarly, Hansal referred to Kangana's song from Dhaakad titled She's On Fire as, "Abhi kuch gaana aaya uska... you're actually speaking about yourself.". You aspire to these things for yourself, so you put them there in your dreams.
No matter what choices she makes, it's not my place to criticize them. Despite being a big star, even today, and a great actor, I don't think we worked well together. Watch the video to learn why working with her was a huge mistake."
